Living in Sheffield

Known as “Steel City” for its industrial past, Sheffield is an affordable and exciting place to live, particularly for students and young adults and is one of the largest cities in the UK. Over half of Sheffield is dedicated to green space, which makes it perfect for new and growing families.

History of the area

The name “Sheffield” actually originates from the name of the river that runs through the city, the River Sheaf, and has been inhabited since Palaeolithic times. A small market town in the medieval period, Sheffield was already well known for its cutlery, and Chaucer mentions a ‘Sheffelde thwittel’ (a knife) in The Canterbury Tales. By the 17th century it had became the largest centre of cutlery manufacturing outside London, and during the Industrial Revolution Sheffield’s innovations in stainless steel production led to a huge expansion in population.

The property market

New build homes

Demand for new build homes has grown significantly in recent years and many of these builds are in the private sector. A reasonable portion of these builds are purpose-built student accommodation for those attending The University of Sheffield. However, there are also plenty of houses and bungalows being built in the area for those looking for something a little larger.

First time buyers

Sheffield is a very good place to set up home, especially for first time buyers, as the average house price in the area is only around two-thirds of the national average. Alongside being more affordable, Sheffield also offers both country and city lifestyles. It is ranked highly for new families and one of the safest cities in the UK.

Renting in the area

Although rents have risen in recent years, they are only around half of the national average. This makes the area incredibly popular for students and younger professionals. With excellent transport connections, alongside lower rents, Sheffield is an incredibly affordable City with no compromise on lifestyle or leisure.

Schools and education

You’ll be spoilt for choice when moving to Sheffield, as there are over 200 schools to choose from (primary, secondary and alternative). Another reason why Sheffield is so popular among young adults is its universities – it is one of the most popular places to be a student in the UK. There are two uni’s, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. In terms of colleges, you can choose from The Sheffield College, Chapeltown Academy or Longley Park Sixth Form College.

Transport links

Sheffield is incredibly well connected, with both a local tram network and connections to other Northern cities as well as the nation’s capital. In terms of driving, you’ll be in reach of the M1, A57 and M18. If you’re a frequent flyer, then you’re perfectly placed between Leeds Bradford and Manchester airports for European adventures.

Lifestyle and leisure

Places to see

This fantastic city has a buzzing theatre scene, with plays and shows available at The Crucible, Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse and Lyceum Theatre. If you’re more into architecture then you might enjoy a visit to Sheffield Cathedral. Those who enjoy art will love what Millenium Gallery has to offer and for the gamers there’s the National Videogame Museum. The city’s music history is legendary, producing bands such as Pulp, the Arctic Monkeys and the Human League, and there is a thriving live music scene in Sheffield, at venues like the Leadmill and the O2 Academy.

Things to do

Sheffield is the perfect place for lovers of sport, as it’s home to both Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United football clubs, as well as basketball and ice hockey. But if sport isn’t your thing, then you might prefer to visit some green spaces. You’ve got the stunning Sheffield Botanical Gardens, plus Endcliffe Park for those with little ones.

Where to eat

There’s plenty of food to go around in the city, from pub grub to Michelin delights. There’s Joro, which makes use of old shipping containers for its uniquely styled dining. Or, if you’re not looking for a sit-down meal, you can grab a bite at the former cutlery factory and food hall, Cutlery Works. But if it’s traditional Yorkshire food you’re after then Silversmiths is the place to be.

The surrounding area

Just outside of the city you’ll find popular areas like Rotherham and Barnsley. You’re also only a short train journey from the stunning sights of the Peak District. As previously mentioned, you’re also very close to other major cities such as Leeds and Manchester. Sheffield is perfectly placed for those who like the convenience of the city, but want to remain close to the country.
